A Fantastically Fishy Excursion

On Wednesday 13 June, students from Rooms 12 and 8 attended an excursion to the Department of Fisheries, at Hillary's Boat Harbour.

On arrival we had a short break for morning tea, before listening to an introductory talk about fish and fishing in Western Australia. This was followed by activities in our respective classes.

Our first activity involved a session in the Science laboratory. We listened to an interesting presentation about fish, their features and how fish survive in their natural environments. The talk consolidated what we had already covered in the biological sciences unit on animal adaptations. This was followed by a hands-on, small group activity whereby students examined a selection of fresh fish. The fish were smelly and slimy, but students learned a lot from observing and touching the real specimens.

After a brief lunch in the park, we explored the nearby sand dunes, discovering and collecting a range of plants and animals.

Overall it was an engaging, fun and educational experience. Feedback from the students has been excellent, and a lot was learned. The students were great ambassadors for the school and should be proud of themselves.

A special thank you to the parent volunteers, your assistance is very much appreciated.
